Tutorial summary
Week nine tutorial consist of three task. The first task involved visiting the google website and performing a search on a topic of interest. Second task required us to investigate messages posted on a particular topic on a bulletin board. In addition we are required to look at other bulletins which contained them. Thirdly, we are required to visit a podcast hosting site and follow step one. In addition, we are to state the potential benefits of podcast for university students.
1. Visit the Google site - http://www.google.com/ and click on the GROUPS tab and enter a search term on a topic of interest to you. What term did you enter and what group(s) did you find?
I was particularly interested about euthanasia and so my search topic was euthanasia. After entering this search term, I found upto 10 different groups on the first page. Some examples of the groups are as follows: alt.impeach.bush , alt.suicide.holiday ,alt.revisionism,soc.culture.netherlands,alt.usage.english.

2. Investigate the messages posted on the topic and look through some of the bulletin boards containing them. Record your finding in your log.

Out of the different groups, I have decided to visit the alt.usage.english group. After an indepth reading at the content, it is true that this group is against euthanasia. They stated that euthanasia is undignified. In addition, one of the group members argued that murder is where one person kills another, therefore euthanasia must be murder as it's someone mercifully killing another. If the person was killing themself then it wouldn't be murder instead, it would be suicide. After viewing the other groups discussion, I found very similar response across the board with a few exception where the groups were pro euthanasia.

3. Visit a podcast hosting site such as http://podcasts.yahoo.com/. Enter a search term of interest to you. If possible, listen to at least one or two podcasts. Look through the library’s website http://www.ecu.edu.au/library/services/podcasts.html

4. What are the potential benefits of podcasts for university students? Record your response in your log.
Once again I visited a podcating site and entered the search term euthanesia. ThereI found that there are much dicussion and controvercy concerning this topic. In addition, I was able to understand the reason why some people are going for such act and why some are going against it. After some navigation through the ecu library, I found several potential benefits of podcast for university students. Firstly, one may question what isa podcast? A podcast is an audio file which can be downloaded and played on a PC or an mp3. The podcast on the ecu library website are mainly an audio tour of both ecu metro campus. In addition, it contained information about how to use ecu library resource. The potential benefits of podcast for university student is that it enable them to find resources which are difficult to find on the world wide web, journal articles and books.
Reading Summary 1 - 'Guide to using Email'

Despite the positives in using emails to communicate, they can also be incredibly inefficient. As the sender of an email, there are several ways one can make their emailing process more efficent:
1. Ensure that email is the right communication tool for your purpose.
2. Ensure you state the main purpose of your message within the first sentence.
3. If you have a request, phrase it as a question to ensure that your recipient knows you need response.
4. If you send an email to a group, you may not receive a response unless you are specify who in that group is responsible for the follow up.
5. If you need a response, make sure that you are clear about what you need.
6. Never assume people will know what you are talking about
7. Don't forget the rules of grammar and punctuation, as doing so will result in an increasing chances of being misunderstood.
8. If you are writing one message then you should keep the message about one topic. If you would like to add more than one, be sure to start a new paragraph and also if necessary change the subject line of your mail message to better describe the new topic.
9. Always provide a summary when you forward a message.
There are several ways which a recipient can make their message more efficient and effective:
1. You should never make any assumptions about the sender’s emotional state unless the sender actually say so.
2. If you do believe that the sender intended to send you a rude email, do not send equal charged response because it will make the matter worse.
3. If the message you receive does not make any sense, ask the sender for further clarification.
4. For help to keep your messages organized, you can set up rules to hep organize incoming messages by using Microsoft Outlook. You can also use colour to organize messages and set up an Outlook filter that automatically moves messages from that lost into a separate folder.
When using email, it is very difficult for one to get their point across. Likewise, it is also very easy for them to be misunderstood. By learning proper email etiquette, one is most likely to be persuasive and inoffensive. In order to do so, one must stick to basic rules such as:
1. Think of an appropriate subject by selecting an effective title to reflect it’s content.
2. Address recipients properly by using people’s names by spelling them correctly.
3. Be sure to select an appropriate tone by being more formal during the first contact and use smileys to lighten the tone such as :) :D :P.
4. It is always best to avoid irony and sarcasm since it is hard to convey your true emotions.
5. Always edit your message and to do that use your spelling checker to spot mistakes such as typos, missing punctuation and grammar.
6. For attachments, do not send them to people you do not know unless you ask them first.

Reading Summary 2 - 'The Problem with SPAM'

UBE (Unsolicited Bulk Email) is known as Emil SPAM. It has the potential to destroy the value of electronic mail. It is a form of advertising which imposes real and measurable costs on the recipients.
The problem with UBE is that it can transmit one million messages for no more than transmitting one. There are no limits. It increases the processing and storage requirements of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and businesses. The only solution that can effectively stop the problem of UBE is the direct legislation. It is required so it would be able to:
-Ban the practice of transmitting UBE
-Ban the sale of tools designed for spanning
-Ban the marketing of too as being suitable for the purpose of spanning
-Provides a right of action to the recipient
-Expresses the change in terms of penalty unit and
-Covers the spanning by Australia interests
